This is my place of relaxation. There’s tea and fast wifi that let me weather the rush hour back home without actually sitting in a car. But this old computer came and ruined it.

Because this old machine hates me and won’t connect to the wifi so I can’t do my homework here.

Is that an old 17" Pro?

This is indeed an 8 year old device.

And despite having 4gb of ram it cannot fathom 4 safari tabs at once.

If its that old you can probably upgrade the ram. Its pretty cheap and easy to do.

I’m typing this on a 9yo MacBook, and might have a solution for that. Safari can’t be updated past a certain point with our older OS-es, which means it can’t really cope... But you can use Chrome or Firefox with good results. I have 14 tabs open in Ffox right now and everything’s working perfectly. I often start to get slowed down when it’s closer to 30 or 40 tabs lol

This is why I don’t think I’ll ever buy a Mac. I bough my Toshiba for $500 USD and it has 8gb of RAM and 750HDD. The Mac’s I’ve seen have been twice as much and had less than that.

Although I guess that’s not factoring the price I pay for being on Windows 8.0 I remember looking into getting Windows 10 for free, but I decided against it. I forgot why, but I remember it was a good reason.

I think we used ubuntu in our programming course.

I thought it was slow, and whenever I worked home it read my programs differently.

Not gonna buy an extra four gigs for a few months

I’ve got a 2012 with 16gb ram and an i7 and it’s absolutely brilliant. Never had problems out of it. Knock on wood lol

My mac was a 2013 with similar specs

It came with a KBB and after it was fixed (and they almost refused giving me the warranty) it started having voltage hikes that took out the screen and then the hard drive. The techs at the apple store denied wrongdoing and said it was my fault for using my laptop on “a charged surface” whatever the fuck that means.

I recently wiped my old ‘09 and gave it to my girlfriend, she’s love it. A lot better than her PC of the same vintage. Its probably a simple fix, don’t hate the the thing, its 7 years out of warranty.

I do like OSX way better than windows but the hardware has given me mostly pain lately.

Was just providing an option. It would still be a currently-supported OS, would run better than OSX on that hardware, and cost you nothing but the time to try it! :)

I have a late 13 15" pro with 16gb of ram, Nvidia independent graphics, and a half tera SSD that doesn’t work. it also has an i7 and about the one in the picture... let me check,

huh, I’m genuinely impressed by the stats!

This one is a late 11 17" with 4gb of ram. an i7 clocked at 2.4. and AMD graphics. Its got a 3/4 Terabyte HDD.

The late ‘11 is the one you are trying to get working right now right, and your late ‘13 model is down for the count at present?

Oh wow...4GB RAM, a 2.4GHZ I7 and AMD graphics should EASILY and happily run Linux, no problem, if you wanted to give it a shot. I would recommend Linux Mint as it’s pretty customizable and you could set the menus up similar to MacOSX if you wanted to. Ubuntu would be another good option.

I have a Core i7 gaming desktop running Windows 10, but my daily laptop is an older Win8-era (Quad-core AMD A6-5200 CPU @2.0GHZ w/8GB RAM, Radeon HD8400 graphics) HP Pavilion Touchsmart 14" running Linux Mint 18.3 MATE 64-bit and it’s perfectly usable for pretty much anything and it runs great. If there are certain programs you rely on, there may not be Linux installs for them, but there are often decent replacements. I use Krita as a replacement for Photoshop on my laptop, for example...not quite all the same features, but very close!

You can set up eye candy like docks, etc as well, similar to the OSX dock. I use one one called Cairo dock. My current desktop looks like this right now (Cairo dock at the right). The panel at the bottom can be completely customized or moved to any side of the screen, and you can add more even more panels if you like - it’s very easy to set things up EXACTLY how you want:

Kinja'd!!!

Good luck if you do decide to try it! :)

It better run linux, lol.

We used 500mb ram on the programming computers in college.

I only want it to run really, anything else is honestly optional. If I ever get to try it I’ll certainly give linux mint a thought!
